When Character Doesn’t Do It

Mr. Obama expressed his desire to make voting mandatory. There is only one reason for this: There are no accomplishments and no character that allows him to achieve votes based on merit alone. His words ring hollow and his thin-skinned personality rules recklessly. Somewhere in his unspoken thoughts relishes a third term. His countenance is a daily reminder. He had such a great opportunity when he was elected. Blow it he has, and I fear the next 22 months so desperately that it is palpable in the way my heart reacts each and every time I go online.  Usually, it is somewhat easy to mentally find an alternative to  what is happening to and in America. For instance, there has always been a speck where I said “I can always move” or “someone will finally do something”. I don’t feel that way anymore. There’s no place to go and no one will do anything. Our choices are being ruled by tyrants or going along submissively for the safety of whatever little bit of freedom we have left. Both options leave a distinct taste of awful.

I fear both. If ever there was a time for prayer, it is now. And, it is urgent.

  1. Obama didn’t actually express a desire for mandatory voting. He said it would be “transformative” if it were to happen. That’s not the same thing at all. Since those who don’t vote are mostly young (they don’t care enough), poor (they have to work or have more dire concerns), minorities (obstructions and challenges to voting), and immigrants (legal immigrants find the process confusing at first), it obviously WOULD be transformative in terms of who votes. I’m not convinced it would change the election results, which haven’t been close since Bush vs Gore.

    I have a solution for your fear. Stop caring so much what the government is up to. They are always engaged in one kind of nonsense or another, but it doesn’t have to impact your life significantly.

    I haven’t seen any notable differences in my ability to live and thrive based on who happens to be President, and I have worked under seven of them. The ones you dislike are quite easy to ignore, as I did during the Nixon years. It’s always individual stuff that matters more, like whether I have a credential and skill set that’s currently in demand, or whether my family relationships are supportive or a drain on my time and energy.

    There’s no wrong time for prayer. On that we agree.

    1. Thank you. You make sense but my life has been impacted by the nefariousness. I try not to worry but it’s difficult. When I am gone I want to believe, at least, that my grandchildren will be free.

    lcgl4 – Your instincts, your knowledge, your experiences, your ability to think and put two and two together are not to be discounted and certainly not whitewashed – TAKE THE DAMN BLUE PILL!

    So long as you breathe you must fight for those grandchildren the only ways (I assume) you can – by speaking your mind and fervent prayer.

    We cannot know beforehand the results of our efforts but strive we must. Character DOES count.

    I will say a prayer for your grandchildren tonight. Please say a prayer for mine.

    1. Thanks for denigrating my sincerity by using an irrelevant movie reference. I was only suggesting that fear-based decision making isn’t effective, if your intent is to make things better. You have to look at these situations more separated from emotion, because the government IS always up to something, no matter who is in power.
